In 2011 after a reorganization of the firefighters helping the children at Christmas, Newton County Christmas for Kids was formed. This is a totally non-for-profit organization. That means all of the helpers volunteer their time with this organization. All funds received go toward helping the kids.
Every year they find a warehouse to set up as a distribution center for the toys. Then the area Newton County fire departments, Newton County Ambulance district, and Newton County Rescue and Recovery volunteer their time to gather, wrap, and distribute the toys.
Each year the organization helps over 190 Head Start children in Granby, Neosho, and Joplin. In addition, the organization helps over 400 less fortunate kids of Newton County have a better Christmas.
The Chili Cookoff
This organization is solely based off of donations. In 2013, after some consideration, the Chili Cookoff was founded as a way to add additional funds to the project. Each and every year there is a competition to see who has the best chili. Judges are volunteers from the firefighters, ambulance, rescue and recovery teams as well as local individuals.
After the chili cookoff has completed, then it is a chili feed for all in attendance. On top of the chili cookoff, there is a silent auction. Donations come from individuals and local businesses.
This Saturday night will be the 6th Annual Newton County Christmas for Kids Chili Cookoff and Silent Auction. (Your picture could be there this year!!)
