Hello everyone! Last weekend was Memorial Day weekend, it has several meanings for people. It is a federal holiday in the United States, observed on the last Monday in May. It commemorates the U.S. men and women who died while in military service.
For most people is it the official start of the summer season. Here at Extreme Sports SCUBA, this weekend, besides being a time to remember the people that died while in service to our country, it starts the local dive season and the start of Open Water classes open water dives at Beaver Lake.
The start of this year’s Memorial Day weekend, Friday the 24th, must of have been the day for vehicle issues. In just getting to the lake on Friday there were 2 flat tires, 1 tore up trailer jack, 1 destroyed trailer fender, and 1 truck with a coolant leak, which resulted in several gallons of coolant having to be added by the time the truck was dropped off at the mechanic’s to be repaired.
Luckily all the bad vehicle luck ended on Friday. We enjoyed some beautiful days at Indian Creek campgrounds. We did have a thunderstorm come through late one night. The water temperature was in the mid-70s from the surface to the first thermocline at approximately 30. The visibility was anywhere from less than a foot to greater than 15 feet, depending on where and when you were checking it. Not bad for Beaver lake considering all the rain that we’ve had.
We had nine students complete their open water class this weekend, after two days of diving. We also had several divers that just wanted to come out and practice their skills after not diving all winter.
Of course, we can’t spend all of our time diving. We had to eat too! As you know we like to eat. Saturday night we had pulled pork, and a slew of sides and a few desserts for around 25 people. We had more than enough left over for pulled pork sandwiches on Sunday night.
Monday morning we went and had breakfast with NEBCO. This year we didn’t have the largest group as we have in the past. That didn’t stop us though. After breakfast, we went back to the lake and finished some checkout dives.
Overall it was a good weekend to be diving and be sharing time with old friends and making a few new ones too.
